Travel Behaviour Change – West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC)

Targeting travel behaviour change amongst employees at West Dunbartonshire Council, supporting DHC. A large scale office relocation programme across the workforce was timeously grabbed to affect travel behaviour. The strongest factor affecting behaviour change was the impact of the planned reduction in staff car parking provision.

We set up a staff reward scheme to both support and nudge travel behaviour change. The DHC led Best Route product (www.bestroute.net ) was based on an employee reward scheme with credits awarded for use of PT, walking and cycling modes. Mounting credits enable the employee to claim a range of rewards, examples are; free cinema tickets, leisure vouchers, cheaper off peak PT. Credits are claimed via a scanner device in the workplace. Additional motivational approaches around free cycle maintenance and training and active travel workplace champions feature. Leaflets and visuals with scheme marketing, active travel orientation and destination distances also assist. We worked on the staff survey, information days, best route product marketing and scheme sustainability.
